Kiran Gandhi chose the recent London Marathon to stand up for the women of the world. Making a bold choice to opt for no sanitary wear during the 26.2 mile run when she knew she would be on her period, Gandhi raised awareness for women across the globe who do not have access to these very basic necessities.
Not only did she run the race with her period blood down her legs, she also raised over $6,000 for Breast Cancer Care. Gandhi blogged about her experience in a post entitled ‘Sisterhood, blood and boobs’ in which she said, “if there’s one person society won’t fuck with, it’s a marathon runner. If there’s one way to transcend oppression, it’s to run a marathon in whatever way you want. On the marathon course, sexism can be beaten. Where the stigma of a woman’s period is irrelevant, and we can re-write the rules as we choose.”
Highlighting the struggle women go through, especially those in undeveloped areas, those who are homeless and for any woman who hides this natural part of life away from the world as though it is something we should be ashamed of. This is why Kiran Gandhi is Woman of the Week!
