How Two Twins with Radically Different Styles Rocked the Music World

Ibeyi is a French-Cuban duo of twin sisters, Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz. Lisa, the predominant singer, primarily sings in English, however the pair occasionally throw in some Yoruba – a Nigerian language that their relatives spoke before they were brought to Cuba as slaves by the Spanish in the late 1700s. Ibeyi – pronounced ee-bey-ee is the Yoruba for ‘twins’. The pair although born in Havana grew up in Paris, where they currently reside.

While Lisa sings Naomi plays traditional percussion instruments from her Spanish/Cuban background such as the cajón and Batá drum. Their music incorporates Yoruba, French and Afro-Cuban stylings and fuses beats with jazz and traditional instruments.

Their single River came out earlier this year and we can’t wait to hear more from the pair.
